Today, he is the Co-Founder of goDutch - a new-age fintech app that powers group payments, helping them to split bills, track & pay via UPI.

In this episode of The Shape of Work podcast, he shares his journey from doing civil engineering to founding goDutch. In addition, he shares:

  • The story behind starting up goDutch- India’s #1 expense splitting app
  • Lessons he learned as a first-time entrepreneur
  • Hiring tip for first-time founders
  • Future of work: Remote, hybrid or in-office

How did goDutch start?

goDutch is a ‘born in lockdown’ company. Aniruddh and his friends realized the hassles of doing a group payment. There is a solution for one-to-one payments but group payments are always troubling. In addition to this, the app allows one to keep a track on how much one spends, give alerts for pending payments, and more.

It organizes the entire group payment process and also removes social barriers coming around in asking money from friends.

Hiring in goDutch:

Hiring was a difficult thing for the company as no one made a hire or even knew how to hire before this.

Hence they narrowed the qualities they wanted in their hires.

That has been the easiest thing for them as they created a process where they would try to interact with the person and then give them an assignment. They looked for what the candidate could do to grow the company.

Leading teams effectively:

One thing they realized that all of them should be chasing the same goal. That is where they can assure best results. In addition, the company focuses on good engagement activities, and schedules feedback calls to focus on the well-being of the employees. It is working on building a relationship with them and helping them if they are facing any problem while working.

These are the ways the company pursues to manage their teams.

Hiring tips to other founders:

According to our guest, an early stage startup should:

  1. Hire people who have similar energy and passion, who are ambitious
  2. People who have the required skill set

HR lessons Aniruddh picked up along the way:

There are plenty of lessons Aniruddh picked through this startup. There are many people who do not follow the same core industry that they studied for. But that should not be as important as having work experience and the skill set in the role they are opting for. Additionally, discussing problems with the employees can help the company understand how they interact with it and find a solution.

He also discusses the importance of open communication.

Remote work vs in-office:

Aniruddh feels that as a startup, people have to brainstorm and form strategies together. Hence they want to keep it in-office. Later, a few roles can be made flexible/hybrid accordingly.
